Photographic Highlights -
Men I’ve Met - gregg, 2005
This was the photograph that started the project that has never really ended. It’s my go-to when I need to clear my head and just make photographs. The beginnings of my relationship with gregg were very, how do i put this, convoluted? We met at the ending of my very long first relationship…I needed comfort and understanding. Things ended very selfishly on my end. However, through time we have become really wonderful friends; he’s one of the few friends I have kept since I moved to brooklyn. He’s an amazing photographer and friend, and I truly love him dearly. This project is sometimes only looked at on the surface and in the beginnings I often got frustrated by it. However with the support of curators like Sylvia Wolf (who is amazing if you don’t know who she is), I realized that it would be something I would be working on for my entire photographic career, changing and evolving through the years. I’ve never felt comfortable as a gay man or in gay social circles. Making these photographs helped me through my social anxiety and allowed for brief sentimental connections. Sometimes even sensual, but never sexual. Through time the characteristics of subjects I pick have changed, they now aren’t only gay men, and I’ve changed the way I depict “nudity”. These highlights can get long winded and when you’ve written 20-30 pages on a particular project it’s hard to summarize, especially when it comes to each particular story. So this is a little bit of insight, and a special thank you to Gregg, for as a subject, he helped me start this project.
